MetaMask

Ethertify uses MetaMask to interact with the Ethereum blockchain. In this post we briefly describe what is MetaMask, how to install it to get it redy to be used in Ethertify and some other important issues you might take into consideration.

Metamask is a browser extension available for Google Chrome, Opera and Mozilla Firefox. This extension allows you accessing Ethereum enabled applications and sign transactions to interact with the Ethereum blockchain.

MetaMask also allows you to create and manage different identities: each time that Ethertify needs to perform a transaction and write to the blockchain, you will get a secure interface to review the transaction, before approving or rejecting it.

You can create several accounts with metamask and switching among them at anytime. Ethertify profiles are associated to one account and, in the case of Entities, the account needs to be unique. You do not need to worry about signing a transaction with the wrong account. Ethertify will warn you and the operation will not be allowed.

You can use Ethertify even if you do not have MetaMask installed, however, with limited functionality. You will not be able to execute operations that involve Ethereum blockchain like creating certificates or signing certificates. We will help you to add and configure the MetaMask browser extension.

If you are using Chrome browser, thee aare the steps you should follo to get MetaMask extension insalled:

  1. Go to https://chrome.google.com/webstore/search/metamask

  2. Search for the extension called "MetaMask"

  1. Click on + ADD TO CHROME button

  1. Click on Add extension button in the dialog and wait.

  1. The metamask icon will apperar on the toolbar near to the settings button .

This processm might slightly vary for different versions of Chrome browser.

After installing MetaMask, you need to create an account.

  1. Click on the MetaMask icon on the toolbar.

  1. Accept the private notice.

  1. Accept the terms of use.

  1. Set a new password for your account or DEN (your password encripted storage in MetaMask).

  1. Save your seed prhase.

  1. And that is all.

A new account will be automatically created for you. You can set it a name, if you want. If you want to create/import accounts, you can do so from the account button on the top right orner of MetaMask window. From there, you will be able also to switch between accounts.

Do not forget to set up the correct Ethereum blockain to interact with Ethertify. You can do that from the dropdown menu on the top-left corner. Just select Main Network and you are done!

Although your account is only locally stored in your browser, there exist the possibility to recover it to other computers or browsers. When you first sign in with MetaMask you are given a seed phrase. Please, save securely that phrase. That is the only way you have to restore all your accounts in MetaMask. To restore an account, just simply select the option "Import existing DEN",

when signin to MetaMask and then introduce your seed phrase.

You can also import your accounts into MetaMask. This could be a little risky as it will expose your private key for a moment.

To interact with Ethereum blockain you will need some Ether. You need sending ether to your MetaMask account from an another ethereum account or you can purchase it in some exchange such as Coinbase.

Once you have metamask propertly installed, you will be able to use Ethertify to interact to the blockchain. When this happens, you will be required to sign a transaction and a window will pop letting you to know the data you are signing before submitting it to the blockchain. Dirung that process, Ehtertify will show a dialog to wait. While a transaction is pending to be signed in MetaMask , you will not be able to use Ethertify unless you sign or reject the transaction.
